The "3.8 kW" motor, decoded

Watts make a tidy headline, but on a city scooter the honest question is just how much usable horsepower the motor delivers. Convert to the unit everyone feels:

Okinawa does not publish a separate continuous-versus-peak split for the Okhi-90, so we do not invent one. What is published is a 3.8 kW motor and two ride modes: Eco, which caps speed for range, and Sport, which lifts the top end to roughly 85 to 90 km/h. About 5 hp is exactly what you expect for a high-speed city scooter, enough for confident urban pace, not for highway cruising.

Why the modes matter: the same motor feels very different in Eco versus Sport. Eco stretches the 160 km claim toward reality by holding speed down; Sport gives you the headline top speed but spends energy faster. The honest read is that you pick range or pace, not both.

Where "up to 160 km" comes from

The headline gap, and Okinawa is more honest than most here. The claim is a best-case figure, but real city riding is only about a fifth short, not a fantasy. Here is the arithmetic.

Step 1, real energy in the tank. Range starts with how much energy the battery holds: voltage × amp-hours.

Step 2, how much you spend per mile. Consumption (Wh/mi) is the whole game, and it rises with speed because drag rises with the square of speed. Gentle Eco riding sips little; Sport-mode city pace spends more.

The takeaway: press estimates and owner reports put real city range around 120 to 130 km, roughly a 20 percent haircut on the 160 km claim. As scooter range claims go, that is honest. Plan your week around ~125 km, not 160, and you will rarely be caught short.

Charging: read the charger, not the adjective

Charge time is just battery size ÷ charger power, so a vague "fast" claim means nothing without the charger's wattage. Okinawa publishes a 5 to 6 hour full charge.

That lands squarely inside Okinawa's published 5 to 6 hour window, so the claim is credible. Okinawa also states about an hour to reach 0 to 80%, which is plausible because the first 80% charges fastest before the top-end taper. There is no DC fast charging.

The genuine trick is the same one in the innovation list: a removable pack you can carry indoors to a wall outlet, worth more in daily life than any "fast charge" badge. Plan around overnight top-ups and you never think about it.

The fire-safety asterisk

This is the uncomfortable part, and we will not soft-pedal it. In 2022, after fatal e-scooter fires, Okinawa recalled thousands of scooters alongside other Indian brands, and a government investigation traced the wider fire wave to faulty battery cells and modules.

The Okhi-90 is a later, premium product and is not the model at the center of those incidents. But the brand's name carries that history, and it is the single most important thing to weigh against the feature list. Buy it with eyes open: follow the charging guidance to the letter, do not leave it charging unattended overnight in a living space, and confirm the current battery certification before you commit.

⚠ Battery-safety history We flag this because it is material, not to scaremonger. The 2022 recalls and the fire investigation are documented public events tied to several brands including Okinawa. The Okhi-90 itself was not recalled, but if the brand's history is a dealbreaker you cannot get past, that is a legitimate reason to look elsewhere.
